Compact tractors under 120 hp spend most of their working hours moving materials around the farm, but they also need to be able to handle field tasks. For this reason, they have to be compact, low enough to pass through shed or barn doors, maneuverable, but also offer a high payload and high standards of operator comfort. That is exactly why the medium/high power segment is seeing CLAAS introduce its new AXOS 3 tractor on the market, powered by a 3.6-liter Stage V four-cylinder Fiat Powertrain (FPT) engine. The German company headquartered in the north-western town of Harsewinkel produces four models offered with 92, 103, 112 and 120 horsepower and maximum torque from 366 to 466 Nm at 1,500 rpm. CLAAS' new tractors are also approved for operation with hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) based fuel. To put all the power on the ground, while effectively protecting the terrain, the AXOS 3 can be equipped with large rear tires (up to 1.6 meters), while the large front wheels offer high traction and maneuverability even on difficult terrain or when using heavy equipment. The technicians of the German company have opted for a six-speed transmission, available in three versions: 12/12 with mechanical reverser, 24/12 with TWINSHIFT powershift and REVERSHIFT clutchless reverser, and 36/18 with TWINSHIFT powershift and REVERSHIFT clutchless reverser. The maximum speed is 40 km/h at 1,750 rpm. In the REVERSHIFT models it is possible to change gears using the clutch button on the gear lever instead of the pedal. In addition to the mechanical handbrake, the 24/12 and 36/18 versions can be equipped with Park-Lock, which controls parking electrically and is activated via the REVERSHIFT lever located to the left of the steering wheel. There is also an optional SMART STOP function available, which allows the driver to restart without putting his foot down on the clutch. This is particularly useful when working with the front loader or in the field with the round baler. Strong points of the new Axos series include operator comfort. The cabin, which was designed specifically for the AXOS 3, is generously sized with the cockpit featuring comfortable legroom and numerous storage compartments. The glass surface is very large and together with the low hood gives a 360-degree view of the work space. The optional FOPS-certified transparent sunroof offers an optimal view when using the front loader. The doors open forward at a 180-degree angle to make it easier to get in and out of the driver's seat, using the full width of the door (88 cm). This feature is particularly useful in narrow spaces such as the feeding aisle on livestock farms. Finally, the AXOS 3 Series is able to handle the heaviest equipment, thanks to a payload of up to 3,600 kg and a maximum lifting capacity of 5,300 kg in the rear. Up to four mechanical distributors are available for tools and front loaders.
