The Casalina farm, a laboratory for agriculture of quality
The EIMA Show demonstration trials are to be held on the terrain belonging to an historic farming enterprise managed by the Agriculture Education Foundation in Perugia. The nearly 2,000 hectares of the farmland extents into the three municipalities, Marsciano, Deruta and Collazzone, and the specializations on the spread are viticulture, olive groves and livestock raising capable of providing the logistics for the event set to draw a thousand or more of business people not only from Umbria but also all the central Italian regions
The EIMA Show demonstration trials will be held next July 28 and 29 on the Casaline farmland in Casalina di Deruta in the Province of Perugia. The total area of the farmland is 1,800 hectares, 1,405 hectares of which are usable agricultural area (UAA).
The land extends into the communities of Marsiano, Deruta and Collazzone and is divided into four sectors, Casalina, Le Masse, Badiola and Sant’Apollinare. The level terrain runs along the banks of the Tiber River for 500 hectares. The crops are mainly cereal grains and maize whereas the hilly terrain is used for 55 ha of vineyards and olive cultivations.
Livestock raising of Friesian cattle is conducted near the Casalina center and the Chianina breed is raised near the center of Le Masse.
The Farm is run by the Agriculture Education Foundation in Perugia, an institution created by Royal Decree, January 21, 1892, for transferring to the state of Italy the administration and conservation of the monumental heritage landed property formerly held by the Benedettina Cassinese Community in Perugia.
The Agriculture Education Foundation is in charge of the conservation of the Saint Peter Church, declared a national monument, the historic archives, the monastery library, the monumental features of the ex-convent of Benedictine monks and other heritage assets declared of historic and artistic interest.
In collaboration with the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and the Environment, the Agricultural Education Foundation in Perugia promotes cultural activities and paleographic studies of archives and historic and artistic work.
Along with cultural heritage conservation activities on the foundation’s site and in cooperation with the University of Perugia, especially with the Departments of Agrarian Environments and Food and Veterinarian Medicine, the foundation is active in furthering scientific research and the education and training of future farmers.
The general public attending the EIMA Show in large numbers will be able to witness new generation machinery on trial and confer with manufacturers’ technicians to gain an understanding of the features of new devices and learn at first hand of what is offered by these precision systems. The theme selected for the EIMA Show – applying the most innovative electronic and IT solutions to agriculture – is generating special interest among farmers due to the clarity that these technologies are the most efficient way to rationalize production factors, product quality, the safety of workers and environment compatibility.
