Modula Farm, technologies for controlled agriculture
At EIMA 2022, the Reggio Emilia-based company Modula (based in Salvaterra di Casalgrande), which specialises in the production of automatic storage warehouses, presented the new Modula Farm, a vertical storage system with drawers for growing strawberries and other high value products. Developed together with the German company Kalera, which designs and produces systems for vertical agriculture, the innovative cultivation system was awarded the Technical Innovation 2022 prize in Bologna. The Modula Farm is a cutting-edge technological solution designed for agricultural applications in a controlled environment that, thanks to the possibility of constantly monitoring temperature, heat (lighting is artificial) and irrigation, makes it possible to optimise plant growth processes, improving productivity and the quality of the crops themselves. Precisely because of these characteristics, Modula Farm technology makes it possible to overcome the limitations related to the seasonality of agricultural production and climatic constraints, since - from sowing to harvesting - each phase of the process is rigorously controlled by the system itself. But the Modula Farm is also a highly environmentally sustainable system designed with the aim of improving the use of resources (water, for example) and completely eliminating pesticide treatments, and with them the use of harmful chemicals. Furthermore, thanks to the techniques of controlled environment farming, Modula Farm makes it possible to achieve multiple annual flowering cycles and to cultivate in any location, even within large cities or in inaccessible areas, without external variables influencing the plant growth and, therefore, the final harvest.
