Scorrendo i dati dell’Osservatoriosugli infortuni nel settoreagro-forestale
del2014, lealtre tipologiedimacchinepiù frequentementecoinvoltene-
gli eventi registrati sono i motocoltivatori/motozzappatrici (10% del to-
tale) e lemotoseghe (9%del totale). Daevidenziarepoi gli infortuni che
coinvolgono l’alberocardanico, il66%dei quali presenta risvolti fatali per
gli operatori (Tab.1).
Un ulteriore dato al quale guardare con attenzione riguarda le informa-
zioni relativealla fasciad’etàdegli infortunati: unaquota considerevole
di casi (67%del totale) coinvolgesoggetti aventi un’etàpari osuperiore
ai cinquant’anni (Tab.2). È risaputo che il comparto agricolo si caratte-
rizzaper l’elevataetàmediadegli operatori,magli elementi chespiega-
noquestodatosonoda cercarenon certonelle capacitàdegli operato-
ri ma nell’approccio che questi spesso hanno con il mezzomeccanico:
gli agricoltori inetàavanzata infatti, forti dellapropriaesperienzaedi una
ostentatasicurezza,commettonoerrori cheunacorretta formazionepo-
trebbeevitare.
Il quadrocheemergedalloscorreredi questi dati èabbastanzasconfor-
tante, speciesesi guardaal numerodelle vittime. Lo “svecchiamento”
o l’adeguamentodel parcomacchinenazionaleeunacorretta formazio-
ne e informazione degli utilizzatori dellemacchine agricole sembra rap-
presentare l’unica strada per arginare il fenomeno dellemorti bianche
areversatileand themost usedso it comesasnosurprise that theyare thema-
chinesmost involved in accidents. On the other hand, what is surprising is the
number and the seriousness of these accidents. Today, tractors are equipped
withprotectiondevices in thecab incaseof rollover,ROPS (Roll Over Protection
Structure), and seatbelts suitable to keep the driver inside this rollover protec-
tion. The problemariseswith older tractorswhicharenot equippedwith safety
devicesbecause theprevailingnormswhen theywerebuilt didnot require them.
According to thedata in theObservatoryonaccidents in theagricultural-forestry
sector2014,other typesofmachinerymost frequently involved in these reported
eventswere cultivators and two-wheel tractors, accounting for 10%, and chain-
saws, 9%of the total.Alsonamedareaccidentswithdriveshafts,66%of which
are fatal for the operator (Tab. 1).
Other data to look at are those providing information on the age categories of
those involved inaccidents.Themajorityof thesecases,67%,areworkersaged
fifty yearsormore (Tab.2). It iswell known that theaverageageofworking farm-
ers ishighbut this factor doesnot explain the reason for thisdatawhichshould
not be searched for in the skills of theseworkers but in theway they often ap-
proachmechanical means. Farmers of advancedage, in fact, have long experi-
encebehind themand takepride in their safetybutmakemistakeswhichcould
be avoidedwith correct training.
Thepicturewhich takes shapewhile running through thesedataare fairly trou-
bling, especially when leaning of the number of victims. Lowering the average
age, updating the national machinery inventory and using correct training and
information for agriculturalmachineryend-usersseem tobe theonlypath to fol-
low tocurb thewhitedeathsphenomenon inagriculture.The instruments toap-
