ensare globalmente ed agire localmente è un presupposto valido per af-
frontare problemi complessi ed estesi attraverso il contributo di iniziati-
ve circoscritte.
Con questo spirito il Gruppo d’Azione Locale – Gran Sasso Velino (GAL GSV) ha
attivato il “ProgettoMiscanthus” – cofinanziato dal Programma di Sviluppo Ru-
rale dellaRegione Abruzzo (fondi 2007-2013) – per risolvere due questioni prio-
ritarie che riguardano l’agricoltura italiana e anche alcune specifiche realtà dei
65 Comuni ricadenti nel territorio del GAL Gran Sasso - Velino. Queste sono: Il
fenomeno dell’abbandono delle aree rurali, in particolar modo quellemarginali,
dovuto a problemi di ordine economico e strutturale del contesto locale; la pre-
senza di elementi inquinanti nei suoli agricoli per l’uso intensivo di fertilizzanti
e anticrittogamici.
In tale ottica il progetto, che si è concluso lo scorso giugno a due anni dall’av-
vio, ha consentito di svolgere un’attività di sperimentazione agricola su un fon-
do, localizzatonel Comunedi Barisciano (AQ), doveè statamessaa colturauna
varietà di Miscanto (pianta erbacea poliennale) in grado di operare un’azione di
“phytoremediation” del terreno e produrre, con bassi input energetici, elevate
quantità di biomassa ligno-cellulosica.

LocalActionGrouphasdefinedamodel of anagro-energysupplychain for the
Abruzzo foothills which can be replicated on a national scale. Other than the
productionof biomass for energy use,miscanthus canplay an important phytoextration
role for the removal of dangerouselementsor compounds fromagricultural soil.
Think globally and act locally is a valid premise for copingwith complicated andwide-
spreadproblemsby contributing to circumscribed initiatives.
In this spirit, the Local ActionGroup –GranSassoVelino (GALGSV) set up theMiscant-
husProject cofinancedby theEuropeanUnionRural Development Progam for theAbruz-
zoRegionunder 2007-2013 funding.Theaimwas toanswer twopriority questions per-
taining to Italian farmingandalso to thespecificconditionsof sixty-fivemunicipalitieswith-
in the territoryof theGALGranSasso–Velino.Theseare: thephenomenonofabandoned
rural areas,especiallymarginal lands,due to financial and structural problemsassociat-
edmainly with local conditions; the presence of polluting elements and compounds in
agricultural soil due to intensiveuseof fertilizersand fungicides.
With thispoint of view, theprojectwhich ran for two yearsandcame toaclose last June,
led toexperimentalworkon land located in themunicipalityofBarisciano, in theProvince
of L’Aquila, where a variety of the perennial Miscanthus, or silvergrass, was planted for
the job of phytoremediation of the terrainwith low energy input and the production of
great quantitiesofwoody-cellulosebiomass.
In fact,due to itswell developed rootapparatus,theMiscanthusgiganteussowncancap-
tureanumberof potentially toxicelementsand retain them in its roots.Someheavymet-
als suchas cadmiumarenot only removed from the soil but also favor thedevelopment
of the cropwhenpresent in low concentrations.Thanks to its rapid growthandelevated
production of photosynthetic biomass, this crop is ideal for supplying plants for conver-
sion into energy for combustion and possibly for the production of second generation
bioethanol.
